Emergency Guide

Poking Wire

Cover with orthodontic wax or Blu Tack, to prevent the wire from poking into the cheek, and schedule an appointment.

Broken Archwire

Treat any poking wires as described above and schedule an appointment. If loose pieces of wire are able to be removed, you may gently slide them out with tweezers and then schedule an appointment.

  • Early or late loss of the baby teeth
  • Difficulty with chewing and/or biting
  • Thumb or finger sucking
  • Protruding teeth
  • Shifting of the jaw when your child bites
  • Crowded front teeth
  • Speech problems
Lost Module

This is not considered urgent, although it may delay tooth movement. If convenient, schedule an appointment.

Ulcers

First, assess the cause of the irritation (refer to the sections above), and schedule an appointment if needed.

If the irritation is due to general trauma, relief can be provided using orthodontic wax, Blu Tack, or products like Brace Relief or Bonjela. Extra wax can be requested at your appointment or posted to you if required.

Wire Out Of Molar Tube

Cover with orthodontic wax or Blu Tack if it’s causing irritation, and schedule an appointment. If this is comfortable, it can be left until your next scheduled appointment — only if that’s within one week.

Loose Or Broken Bracket(s)

If the loose bracket flips around the wire, the module can be removed with tweezers to disengage the bracket. Then schedule an appointment to have it rebonded.

If your next visit is soon (within 1–2 weeks) and the bracket is not causing discomfort, the rebond can wait until then. Please call us to let us know so we can allocate enough time.

If your next visit is further away than 1–2 weeks, please schedule a separate appointment for rebonding.

Broken Fixed Lingual Retainer

This should be repaired as soon as possible — please schedule an appointment. In the meantime, if you have a clear plastic retainer, wear it every night (or full-time if your braces were removed within the past three months).

Broken, Lost, Or Ill-Fitting Retainers/Plates

Please schedule an appointment.
